BeitragThema: ESPN ......... Is everybody happy?   22.07.11 3:28

Since it is the off season still, and nobody else will make any trades with me, I thought that I would throw this out to the group and see what kind of discussion we could generate:

Is everyone happy with ESPN?

I mean, we chose it three years ago and have stuck with it ever since........for better or for worse. The question is, could we do better? Is there a better tool out there for us that would make our lives easier.

I think this group has a lot of people who have a lot of experience using other sites and I would love to hear thoughts on this.

I know that John uses Yahoo in his other league and he speaks highly of it.

The other question is, could we actually change should there be something better? What would that do to player positions for example? Malkin is C/RW on ESPN and if he all of a sudden changed to C only that would be a bit of a hit for me. On NHL.com he is listed as C only. If we used FANTRAX it seems that we could override the position eligibility to match what we have been using on ESPN.........

Plus they seem to have the option of entering Farm Team rules so that we would not have to keep double checking all the time if someone qualifies or not.

I keep bumping into threads saying that FANTRAX is the best site availabe. And free!

Here is a little write up I stumbled upon:

I have been in a points only keeper pool for several years now, and have been surprised with how labour intensive the process had been up until now - one guys enters every transaction in a spreadsheet and then re-posts that to officepools.com Then officepools underwent their "upgrade" last year and scrambled our league data, so we had to go back to the classic officepools site.... we probably should have just used an abacus.

We have several guys who have moved far away (Australia) but are still in our pool that need to draft online. The rest of the guys have resisted other online options (yahoo, etc) for years because we couldn't pull the keepers from the available pool for the online draft component, or rearrange draft picks based on trades, or protect players from one year to the next. Then there are the guys who like to draft all around one table with a couple of beers, so that made a fully online draft unappealing. The draft room involved 8-10 of us in one room drinking beer with a laptop in the corner and you had to first write your pick on the draft board, then go type into msn messenger for the guys overseas.

I decided there had to be a better way and sat down with a coffee and googled the subject... i tripped over fantrax.com last spring and have been dying for the season to start ever since! I used them for 2 playoff pools i run (very basic) and everything ran smoothly, so i decided to test the water a little more. Once the protection lists were due for our keeper league i created our league on fantrax and entered the keepers, then explored to see if i could specify the other parameters we needed.... they have it all!

We can override the positional eligibility of our players to match the reference our guys all use (Hockey News Yearbook)... we can hold an online draft or the overseas guys and put the laptop on commissioner mode and just enter picks for the guys who want to interact in the draft room.... we can still drink beer and have the fun of the draft but now we just connect a projector to the laptop and the draft board projects on the wall.... everyone follows along at the same speed and doesn't get mixed up like before! They let me manually specify the draft order based on the lottery in our pool.... then re-order picks based on trades.... They let me enter all farm rules into the system so nobody has to be the pool watchdog! They will even keep track of the finances if you want... we've so far skipped this.

The kicker.... its free! They just ask that you share your experiences with the site with others in forums like this and click on the odd advertisement they host. So not only has our time and effort gone down, so has the cost! Seemed too good to be true! So i found a link to the feedback portion of the site and sent a message off this afternoon, thinking maybe it will go in an inbox and get looked at someday and discarded.... within the hour i got a reply thanking me for my input and bringing my pool to fantrax! All they asked was that i spread the word about my experiences with the site.

Hmm... free, improved functionality and convenience.... plus lots of fantasy news (for all sports) at my fingertips, all on one site? I'm hooked... only 2 sites you need for your pool in my humble opinion = dobberhockey.com and fantrax.com!

So rarely am i pleasantly surprised with anything new.... this is one of those times, had to share the news!!!

Thoughts anyone?

Essentially, I'll choose to defer to the guy that's looking after it.

I don't see anything wrong with ESPN and the price is right, that's for sure.

I saw that. I am always willing to learn a new site or program or whatever. I'm just wondering if it is worth it at all? I can see if we were stable from one year to the next in regards to our rules/manifesto, but we always seem to be changing something from one year to the next. So, will Fantrax be able to handle any future change(s), whatever they may be?

I have used CBS Sportsline for the past 10 years and have liked the fact that I can write stroies, a message board etc. and all pretty easily accessible but I am not liking the idea of paying $100 every year when I can use ESPN for free. Which I am changing to this upcoming season, by the way.

My thoughts, FWIW.

Just got finished playing around a bit with Fantrax. It looks good I must say, but perhaps we should just sit tight with ESPN for the time being. It has served us reasonably well, and we can always look into it next off season should we not be too happy this season.

It seems a touch late to be changing the site to be honest. I mean ......... we all have to do our homework for the draft so that we can beat Matt Jackson!

I like the fact that ESPN has a league history that shows how many prizes I've won. Very Happy

Not to mention how many times I've beat that sod Chapler. I think it's 9 out of 10 times, isn't that right Gregger?
