Should we introduce Free Agency Auction Bidding?
1. Absolutely. Let's make a one year test drive and vote on it next summer. If we like it we can remove the mid season draft from future seasons.

Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll Empty
BeitragThema: Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll   Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll Empty06.07.11 1:34

Scoop made the wise suggestion that we ought to start a new poll in order to keep things a bit more organized. Here once again is the summary from ESPN on Free Agent Auction Bidding.

CUSTOM LEAGUE FREE AGENCY AUCTION BIDDING (New for 2011)
Bring the auction experience to your free agent list. A free-agent acquisition budget (FAAB) is used in blind auctions open to every team within the league. League Managers can select this option via a radio button in the "Transaction and Keepers" tab of the league setup process.
In an auction bidding environment, players who are not selected in the league draft, players who are dropped and players added to the player pool during the season become FAAB-eligible for the timeframe set by the League Manager. However, instead of placing a traditional waiver claim, an owner places a bid they feel is appropriate based on a player's value. The LM assigns the pre-determined budget of each team for FAAB bidding over the course of the season. During the bidding period, team owners may bid at any time before the deadline. In a FAAB bidding environment, the only way players can be picked up is through the FAAB bidding process, and there are no first-come, first-served pick-ups. The bidding process is an open process and there is no sequence for the bids. Team owners may bid at any time during the waiver period, before it expires.

In the event of bids of equal amounts for a player by two or more teams (a tie), the lowest-ranked team in the year-to-date standings will receive the player. During the bidding period, no team can see any other team's bids or bid amounts. All teams can view FAAB bidding results after bids are processed, either on the league home page or in waiver reports. Additionally, all teams can view other teams' budget balances on each team clubhouse and waiver order pages.

If you would like to learn more about FAAB, check out the article "How to use ESPN's new FAAB feature", by AJ Mass. It is as pertinent to Fantasy Hockey as it is about Fantasy Baseball.Click here to learn more.

BeitragThema: Re: Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll   Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll Empty06.07.11 1:42

Well, I am going to come right out with it and let everyone know that I voted for the Free Agent Auction Bidding. It just seems like it would be great fun and I see no harm in giving it a go for one season. Nothing ventured nothing gained as they say.

If things progress far enough in this direction we will all need to fix a dollar value that each team will receive and we will all need to keep in mind that picks for January of 2013 will be off the table because if we like what we see with Auction Bidding then the Mid Season Draft will go down the memory hole.

I am crazy sleepy right now so if I have some of my facts and figures wrong then please correct me in a kind and gentle manner.

So to get this right, we would all start with a Free Agent "budget" and whenever we want to bid on a free agent everybody else would be notified and they would have the chance to also place a bid on this player. The one who bids the most by the end of the period then gets the rights to this player.

Is this correct?

I'd be OK with trying this IN CONJUNCTION with the slow draft this year, and then voting on it next summer. We could all start out with a nominal budget this year. I would be against giving too much moola (and also setting a minimum bidding amount if possible) so as to discourage too much of this during the first year. I like the mid season draft and would hate to see it inadvertently eliminated because of this new form of acquiring players.

You are correct my friend. Coming down to the end of things now. We are at my parents now and will return to Jana's parents on Wednesday and then back to CH on Saturday.

We are having a good time, but I can assure you that traveling with a two year old is not for the faint of heart. What a Face

Yes, I am sure that is the case. The flight back from Johannesburg was 46 hours long, and we noticed one family travelling a similar schedule to ours with two boys the same age as Zackary and Mason. It did not look fun. Perhaps if we manage to procreate in the not too distant future we shall be inspired by all this to stay in Michigan until the little boogers are of a more friendly travelling age.

Glad to hear that you've had a good vacation, and Stacey and I are very sorry we missed you. Hopefully next year something can work out.

Cheers,
Matt

BeitragThema: Re: Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll   Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll Empty15.07.11 22:18

I've been letting this grind all day.

If implemented.
1) roster size doesn't increase if you buy a player, you must drop someone
(This also allows us to retain the mid-season draft)
2) Deadline for acquisitions (prior to the draft) needs set. Perhaps a month ahead, to allow for a draft to fill up a bit.
3) Roster size increases at the draft.
4) Players can once again be picked up after the draft.
5) Perhaps $100 funny money, is the amount.

One nice thing about this would be that in the event of injuries, a team could make a recovery with another player.

Now, how could this be used, to upset other people? Can I bid, knowing that the guy chasing me in the standings has set a player out on the waiver wire?

Is there a way that a player gets set on the waiver wire without anyone else in the pool knowing who did this, until the end of the waiver period? So, I bid $5 on a player. Everyone now has one week??? to make their bid and then the highest bidder gets the player?

Exactly how do drops work? If I bid on four players this week, desperate to get a guy to fill a roster spot... do I have to drop four players? Could I win the player and drop him?

Anyway, some fun elements in the overall concept.

All-in-all I think this would be fine, particularly as there is a way to make certain that every team has a shot at all the "good" players.

His parents live in the Kingston area, and his wife Jana's parents live in Brampton. I think he's heading back to Switzerland in the next day or two, if he hasn't departed already.

That's why I'm answering for him. Smile

http://sports.espn.go.com/fantasy/baseball/flb/story?page=mlbdk2k10faabprimer

After reading this (for baseball) it looks like it's a weekly waiver situation. So for the week all free agents, dropped players, and new listings would be on a waiver list, then at the end of the week (sunday say) anyone that was bid on would be added to the roster of the team that had the highest bid. And everyone else would then be back on the waiver list until the next sunday. If we choose this I would say the money would have to be very low (10$) or higher but limit the moves teams can make. If we have 10$ and make the minimum bid 1$ then that would mean someone could make 10 moves for the year possibly. I'm not sure that is what we want. Or we could give 100$ and limit the moves to say 4 then people would really have to think.

At least this is how I interpret the rules.

So, finally responding to Scoops comments above:

1) roster size doesn't increase if you buy a player, you must drop someone

Agreed. Our roster size is will be 30 after our draft. But, we have a rule implemented that would allow teams to rattle off a 3-1 or a 2-1 style trade without having to drop anyone. Namely, that our roster may fatten up to 33 in the event of one (or several) of those style trades. If we did not take Scoops advice here, then immediately after the draft people could bid on players and fatter their roster. Not what we are looking for her. Great point Scoop.

2) Deadline for acquisitions (prior to the draft) needs set. Perhaps a month ahead, to allow for a draft to fill up a bit.

Agreed. One month prior to the mid season draft we can restrict bidding. We would only need to do this this season as if we like the bidding, it would potentially replace the mid season draft.

3) Roster size increases at the draft.

Not sure what you had in mind here Scoop exactly. Bumping up the roster to 33 and leaving it at that for the entirety of the season with no fluctuations? Would love to hear more.

4) Players can once again be picked up after the draft.

Agreed.

5) Perhaps $100 funny money, is the amount.

Which leads us to John's comments. I think too many moves would not be ideal here. Two options really. Restrict money or moves. Not sure which one is best to be honest. What if everyone had $5? That would translate into a maximum of 5 moves during the season, but in all likelihood less as I doubt that a valuable free agent will go for $1. I think that many will go for more than that translating into less than 5 moves. Love to hear some comments.

I think we should leave the roster sizes as they are now. We draft until how many in September? 29? 30? 31?

Then in January we draft to 32? 33?

Follow those same parameters. A waiver pickup would ALWAYS require the dropping of a player on ones roster.

If we have $5, you may see numerous duplicate bids. Not necessarily a problem, but...

If we had $100, we might see some bids come in very high. $54?

Not sure that I care if a guy makes a whole bunch of moves. If he is, then he's obviously re-shuffling his final D-man? I suppose you could count games and insert a 20 point plug with four games on the week. Placing a cap on moves, would end any behaviour like this.

None of these points are sticklers for me.

BeitragThema: Re: Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll   Free Agency Auction Bidding Poll Empty22.07.11 16:03

After the September draft we will have 30 on our rosters with a minimum of 5 Farm Team Eligible Players (FTEPs).

Normally what we have been doing is then allowing teams to fatten the roster should a 3-1 or a 2-1 trade occur up to a maximum of 33. To be honest, I would not be against leaving our roster size at a specific limit and never playing with it. The simpler the better to avoid confusion.

What if we drafted 30 players in September (with a minimum of 5 FTEPs naturally) and just left it at that for the entirety of the season? It would be simpler. With 30 on our rosters we would be starting 17 with a minimum of 5 FTEPs and that would leave us 8 on the bench. With the auction bidding we could always pick someone up should an injury occur or should someone not be performing up to snuff. Any pick up with the auction bidding would require a drop.

To be honest I would like to simplify the roster size so that we avoid confusion.

Thoughts?

I'm ok with either 30 person roster size or drafting 30 and having a cap at 33 for 2 for 1 trades. Either way is cool with me really. But we will have to vote on this stuff for sure. I would also be ok with, if a trade of two for one and you had an open spot that you could fill it with a waiver pickup without a dropped player. So I guess my vote would be for a 30 person cap roster but if you trade to end up with 29 you can use the waiver pickup to get back to 30. But whatever the majority wants is cool with me. We just have to make sure we think of all the possible situations for rules. I'm a fan of making sure no one can abuse the rules.... and a 30 man roster hard cap and money to use as you like would mean no extra rules, and do whatever espn allows.

And I would suggest $100 funny money with minimum bid of $10. I really only think this would become a big deal if someone comes back to the nhl, or gets traded and we all think his production would go up. It will be fun when a rumour happens that someone it signing and someone pays $50 to get that player and they don't come back.... Also if we do this this year and like it I think we should be able to trade money next year! oh, yeah... I would've payed a lot for Nabokov last year and he never played. lol
