Well, the results are in and I don't think we've ever seen anything like this in the history of the Nutbars. Three victories by the lower seeded teams, and one almost-upset (assuming Lundqvist's assist is taken away from Scott's team). I decided to take a look, and the honest truth is that "upsets" have been few and far between in our league. Here's a comprehensive list of them:
2009:
Zero upsets in the First Round
One upset in the Second Round when Desolation Row (3rd seed) beat Vandelay Industries (1st seed) 570.9 to 438
Zero upsets in the Final round
2010:
Zero upsets in the First Round
Zero upsets in the Second Round
One upset in the Final Round when Buffalo Cab Co. (2nd seed) beat Soo Storm (1st seed) 432 to 410.7
2011:
Two upsets in the First Round:
Soo Storm (8th seed) beat the Juggernauts (1st seed) 501.2 to 388.4
Small Town Dynasty (5th seed) beat Buffalo Cab Co. (4th seed) 508.4 to 503
Zero upsets in the Second Round
One upset in the Final Round when Fitzsy Stars (3rd seed) beat 1.21 Gigawatts (1st seed) 664.8 to 503.5
So there you have it. Out of 21 playoff series in the Nutbars three-year history, we've only had five "upsets." And really, a fifth seed beating a fourth seed or a 1st seed beating a second or third seed aren't REALLY upsets per se. For that reason, the only TRUE upset in my mind would be Soo Storm beating the Juggernauts last year.
Apparently, Brandon is making a name for himself as the Great Upsetter in the playoffs.
Congratulations to all the winners. It is always a good feeling to win, but I think it feels even better when your team is the underdog.
It will be very interesting to see where things go from here. The second round match-up between Brandon and Jarrett should be a doozy, as should the match-up between Scoop and Chris.
