Thema: Kovalchuk........ 15.07.13 23:52
Greetings fellow GM's. Well, I am not sure about you fellas, but the Kovalchuk news was a shocker for me. I did not see that coming. I am curious to see if GM's will be somewhat cautious with Russian players in the future. One never knows it seems.
I read today that Mr. Kovalchuk has signed to play for the KHL, and so I decided to consult the Manifesto for guidance. Here is what I found:
KHL Rules: In situations where a manager loses a player to the KHL, they will be reimbursed as follows. If that player scored more than 75 points during the previous season, the affected manager will be allotted one extra second round draft pick in the next September draft. If the player scored between 60 and 74 points, the affected manager will be allotted one extra third round draft pick in the next September draft. If the player scored between 45 and 59 points, the affected manager will be allotted one extra fourth round draft pick in the next September draft. Any picks awarded will occur at the end of the appropriate round.
**If the player is over 30 years of age the team will not receive a pick for the loss**
Oh, the lockout has reared its ugly head and muddied the waters. There are a couple of ways to look at this I feel.
1. Follow the Manifesto rules by the letter, in which case 31 points would not qualify for any compensation.
2. Make an adjustment for the lockout in the following manner: New Jersey played 48 games last season in total. Kovalchuk tallied 31 points in that time period. Calculate that over a full 82 game season and one arrives at 53 points. Good enough for a 4th round pick as compensation for the loss.
I favour door number two myself, but some feedback is always appreciated.
Thanks
G

I have taken the liberty of updating our September draft chart so that Chris will receive, as compensation for Kovalcuk's flight to the KHL, an additional 4th round pick.

I just would like ot point something out to everyone;
If Malkin went to KHL this off season he would only equal a 4th round pick under the current rules being applied. I am not sure that would be fair, I think we should look at the palyers games played, not the teams total games played. If this was used for Kovelchuk, he would have been a 3rd rounder instead of a 4th and Malkin would be a 2nd rounder instead of 4th....Just something to look at.
If this were a top defenseman the best compensation you would be getting at best a 5th or 6th rder under the current rule because only 2 defensemen had over 30 points in the whole NHL....doesnt seem like that makes sense either...

All fair points Chris. Also, I am not sure if we have anything in place for goalies.

I agree, that does seem low for a player such as a Kovalchuk or Malkin, players whom you build your team around. Kovalchuk's points-per-game were probably it's lowest out of his entire career, and with it being a strike year, that put another spin on the equation. Points-per-game played is a better monitor than points-per-team-games-played. PPG over PPTGP..too many letters.
What's a goalie?

Yes, it looks like our KHL rules need a little work. I will have a glass or red wine over the weekend and whip up something that will include D and G as well.

I favour giving Chris a third round pick for him. He is the type of player one builds around, and factoring in games played seems fair at the very least.
