Thema: Interesting article....... 08.08.14 12:41
Hey fellas, I bumped into this article and liked the idea quite a bit. Do we want to have a conversation about this? ESPN is locked in preparation for the season, but I think that they offer both hits and fighting majors as scoring options.
If I was starting a league today, and if my pool provider had all the options listed above, I’d count hits and fighting majors, and leave penalties out of it. This acknowledges the extra value that David Backes brings to the table with his 270+ hits a season, and it rewards Jarome Iginla for his willingness to drop the gloves a few times a year, while avoiding the silliness of rewarding a fantasy team when one of their players incurs a tripping penalty. But that’s just my opinion; it really comes down to the kind of league you want to build and which players you want to place the most value on.

Fights & Shorthanded points are too random. Even league leaders don't fight but every few games now. A top end SH specialist might get a point every 10 or 15 games.
Hits, Blocked Shots, Faceoff Wins... are all good. I haven't seen a league that uses Time On Ice (three versions - Regular, PP, SH). TOI makes a lot of good sense to me. Watch out, in what you consider to add though, because if you're not careful, you can repeatedly reward the same few guys. Blocked shots are pretty clearly a D-man stat (good thing). Hits are always led by a few insane temperamented forwards, but do a good job rewarding D-men. D-men almost always lead their teams in TOI. I believe CATS rewarding D-men are good, as it brings them more and more into 'value' for a league.
CATS add complexity to a league. This isn't necessarily a good thing. It encourages the insane, and leaves the more relaxed guys a step behind.
All-in-all, I'm pretty happy with the way things are.

I'm coming into the conversation a bit late, but at some point in the future I would be happy to consider adding Hits and Blocked Shots. I agree with Scoop that most of the other categories are too random in nature, and add too much complexity.
My vote would be either:
1) Leave things the way they are
2) At some point in the future, consider adding Hits and Blocked Shots (but also keeping PIMs).
