I could not help but wonder yesterday evening, how fast things change in fantasy hockey. Less than two short years ago, Nutbars du Canucks held its inaugural draft and at that time Evgeni Nabakov was considered a prized possession. One worthy or building a team around I would dare say. Now, he is no longer in the NHL, and therefore, has no fantasy relevance. Gone. Down the memory hole.

I thought it might be interesting to follow his tracks through our fine league in the two short years that he was with us. Here is what I came up with:

September 2008:

Evgeni Nabakov is chosen 12th overall by Desolation Row.

October 31st 2008:

TRADE #4, Oct 31, 2008

Desolation Row gets:

Dion Phaneuf (D) - Calgary Flames
Vesa Toskala (G) - Toronto Maple Leafs
Markus Naslund (LW) - New York Rangers

Fitzsy Stars gets:

Evgeni Nabokov (G) - San Jose Sharks
Patrick O'Sullivan (C) - Los Angles Kings
Braydon Coburn (D) - Philidelphia Flyers

November 6th 2008:

TRADE #6, NOV 6, 2008

Fitzsy Stars gets:

Ilya Kovalchuk (LW) - Atlanta Thrashers
Christobal Huet (G) - Chicago Blackhawks

Soo Storm gets:

Evgeni Nabokov (G) - San Jose Sharks
RJ Umberger (C) - Columbus Blue Jackets

As far as I can tell, that is how it ended for Nabakov. I could be mistaken, but I think from November 6th 2008 until today, Nabakov remained with Brandon and served him very well it seems. Did I miss a trade in there Brandon?

Looking at Nabakovs numbers over the last two years:

2008-2009: 41W 12L 1513 SV 7SO
2009-2010: 44W 16L 1998 SV 3SO

Using our league scoring, in 2008-2009, Nabakov was the 5th most valuable goalie overall. The four ahead of him were Backstrom, Kipper, Ward and Thomas. In 2209-2010, Nabakov was the 3rd most valuable goalie overall behind only Brodeur and Miller.

Crazy that he is not longer in the NHL no? With such great numbers and at only 34 years of age.

Greg.

PS Let's hope that I am not going to have to do one of these little summaries for Kovalchuk in the next few weeks.
