I don’t know if it’s me or not, but this summer has been dreadful in terms of exciting news out of the NHL. I mean, I know the summer is slow but this is ridiculous. This summer we have the Kovalchuk EsCAPades. And we have the continuing saga of Tomas Kaberle. Both will be made into “Made-for-TV” movies of the week sometime soon. We’re a few weeks from training camps, so there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Where there’s ice, there’s hope.
Chatted with Gregger briefly the other day and it seems that he doesn’t have any more fingernails to chew on. The Kovalchuk dilemma has him at wit’s end. I feel for the bugger. That’s why I don’t like those contingency deals. Too much has to happen, especially these days when the KHL is a threat. But have no fear my friend, Kovalchuk will stay in the NHL, although he will have to survive on the Island. Maybe he should take a year off and join Survivor. If Jimmy Johnson can do it; why not Kovy?
Soo Storm had such an historic season (can you call it historic if it’s in a league that has a history of only 2 years?) that he is due for a letdown. Being that it was an incredible season, I doubt that it will ever be matched. But, 2010-2011 will be a much different season my friend. No long winning streaks, no fantastic finishes, no come from behind dramatic victories, none of that. This will be the most boring, most lethargic, most non-eventful season for you compared to last year. Try not to remedy this as it will only make it worse. Nothing you do will change the inevitable. Like Kovalchuk on the Island.
I see a trend with Fitsys Stars. It just hit me like a V-8. In the inaugural season, Matt came in first overtaking Mike at the end. Last year he finished in 3rd place with a late surge but falling short. I don’t know, but if the trend is true, could it be? Could we be looking at 5th place? With the nucleus that you have I wouldn’t think it could be possible. But who knew the mediator would take the NHL’s side in the Kovalchuk matter? Who knew?
Could Vandelay Industries be the Prospal of the Nutbars league? His first year was a definite up year. His second year was a total bomb. Not that Prospal is the bomb in either sense of the word mind you. So, could this be the reversal year? Is this the up year? I don’t know what to think of Mike’s team other than he has suspect goaltending heading into the upcoming season just like Kovalchuk will see with the Islanders this year.
Small Town Dynasty is the position where the only place he can go is up. Joel did get hit with some injuries that put him behind the 8 ball. At least he had an excuse. His team just couldn’t climb out of his early season funk. Just like the funk Kovalchuk had when he was traded to the Devils.
Motley Crue had some great songs in their day. Girls, Girls, Girls; which should’ve been the name of Rich’s team since they played like little girls. But if they looked like the girls in that video, I would have bought season tickets and gone to every game. If Kovalchuk played with a bunch of girls, oh wait, he will be when he signs with the Islanders.
Juggernauts (did anyone see the segue? Girls, juggs. wink, wink) is taking over a team that had potential and was in the top 3 most of the season before fading late. Maybe being under new management the Juggs can push through with a late season surge. Unlike the Devils when they traded for Kovalchuk.
1.21 Gigawatts fizzled out last season with the name change. Just like “Back to the Future” has lost its pizzazz, 1.21 Gigawatts had no energy last year. Maybe Jay needed to boost the energy level. Wasn’t that energy level good for like 1985? Maybe time for team name change just like Kovalchuk will go through this season.
Arthur Tiger had some hard luck in the playoffs and had a decent year but who knows what the outcome would have been if Red had not been allowed to walk away and manage his own team in a different league? Maybe Red was the brains of the operation? It sure seems that Wiz wasn’t the answer, although he did have an answer for just about everything. Kovalchuk wasn’t the answer in New Jersey and they still tried to go back to the well.
And last but not least, Buffalo Cab Co. What can I say about this team? That, I will leave up to your imagination. Let it run rampart and let it take you on a magical mystery tour of your mind. I think that is where Kovalchuk’s head was last year when he was traded to the Devils.
So, that’s how the Nutbars world looks in my mind’s eye. You can tell I am in the midst of the summer doldrums, not to be confused with the dog days which were the past two weeks. Get your program here!

Great post, Ray. As always. I certainly hope my team ends up better than 5th place, but by the looks of a lot of teams, it's going to be a hard-fought battle. I just hope it's close this year. I'd like to see a three-dog race if possible. None of this utter domination that Brandon managed last year. I say it will be three teams down to the wire during the regular season.

I'll even go out on a limb and predict which three teams: Small Town Dynasty, Arthur Tigers, and Desolation Row (assuming Kovy doesn't flee to the KHL). If Kovy does leave the NHL, then I'll say it's either Vandelay or Buffalo Cab Co. that joins the three-way race.
Alas, maybe it's not the season for Soo Storm or the Fitzsy Stars.

I am glad that you are fired up about the draft Brandon, but I have decided that I will be choosing all the players on everyone's rosters this season. I thought that would keep things simple, and nobody would need to worry about freeing up time for a long draft.

I"m pretty excited about this league! Love my goalies! And after looking around there will be some real talent(old and new) in this coming draft. I like my young talent and I'm hopeful I will be competitive this year. Team to beat in my opinion is Fitzsy Stars. However, I'm never good at predictions!

Maybe Red is the brains here. His team advanced from the bottom 3rd (14 teams in Yahoo roto) to lose regular season 1st place 257-256. Playoffs were a disappointment, with elimination in the semi's. He needed Scott Nichol to take a face off over the final 10 minutes of SJ's last game, in order to advance to the final. He's been insanely busy this summer and has built an outstanding roster in this cap league (58.0M thereabouts), with about $8.0M space to fill his final two or three spots and an absolutely wicked set of prospects.
.... hmmmm
.... and Wiz... well, he's a 110 year old hill billy... take from there!
Great post Razor!

I would like to add that I'm looking forward to seeing who 1.21 Gigawatts drops. Tons of talent on that team and you can't keep them all!!!!

Well, thank you John. I hope you are right. Unfortunately fantasy hockey is played on the ice and anything can happen. Of course I would love to win, but most importantly (other than beating Greg yet again) is to see some hot and heavy competition between two, three or more teams. That offers prime entertainment value!

Yeah, it's going to be interesting to see who Jay drops. He definitely has some a few amazing players that will have to duke it out for a spot on his roster. And the more I look at his roster, the more I could see him vying for the title this year. If Savard, Iggy and Zetts all have bounceback seasons, this could be the year for 1.21 Gigawatts.

I agree with Matt. Lots of power on 1.21. Last year there were some rather nasty goalie issues as I recall, but with his acquisition of young Hiller combined with a very sexy Lundqvist and a rambunctious Price he has a very intriguing trio there.
Bounce back year for Jay I expect.
PS Don't try to get Doughty from him. He is holding on to him tighter than a freshly steamed clam in a hot house square dance.

Already tried. Already failed. Enter Victor Hedman.

I believe that Jay will have Doughty for the life of our fine league.
I offered him Malkin, Hossa, Anderson, Carlson, and either Kovy or Crosby for Doughty. No go.
