Well today is the day.........finally.
Not too sure what to expect from the NHL today. I am anything but comfortable.
A few thoughts:
If they reject the contract I think that we can be certain that Kovalchuk will play at the minimum next season in Russia. I read that a very generous three year offer exists that would pay him 42 million. If he were to sign that type of deal in Russia then I would be forced to cut him loose. Ouch.
Is it really necessary to take the full five days to reach a decision? Should they reject the deal they have made it even harder (read impossible) for NJ to try to put in place another contract prior to the start of the KHL season. If they had some objections to the contract they should have voiced them immediately. Seems to me that they are flexing their muscles and enjoying the power that they possess.
In the end, I think that they will accept the contract. From what I read, NJ has addressed the issues that the arbitrator voiced.
We shall see. One way or another this circus will be over today I think.
What a long and painful trip it has been for me.

Would be REALLY nice to have this figured out before the keeper deadline ...

What happens if it's not figured out? Will the trade go through or not?

Hmmm. Good question. I'd like to propose that if nothing is resolved by the time the keeper deadline then the trade goes through - if he goes to the KHL after that date then it's too bad for me.

Up to you guys. I had actually figured the other way, but your version would certainly make Gregger a very happy camper. Let me know.

Well, I feel a little weird having the 'out-clause' in there at all to be honest. So this at least ends the drama for one of us...

Well, that is kind of you Joel. Let's hope that it does not come to that. Let's hope that the NHL approves the contract tonight. It is the 5th of September today and so if the contract is rejected I would think that Kovalchuk would immediately sign with a KHL club and start to play next week. I think that they begin on the 8th of September. I would be surprised if there was another arbitration dragging this nonsense on much longer.

Per Darren Dreger, the NHL and NHLPA have struck a deal with regards to long-term contracts. I'll have more when it is released. The Kovalchuk deal WILL be approved. Welcome to New Jersey (officially, again), Ilya!

I am running to the kitchen to open the Red Wine Ray!
This story has been so strange that I will wait to really celebrate until I see the final official OK.
Great news though and I hope that it remains so.

Okay I feel confident enough now that I hear Kovalchuk is even admitting that the deal is done.
PHEW!

Looks like it is good news for us Joel! What a long and painful process that was. I was honesty expecting another push forward of the deadline.
Nice to have it finally taken care of.
Enjoy that boatload of talent that is headed your way as we speak!
