Advice on Marketing Hockey Book Empty
BeitragThema: Advice on Marketing Hockey Book   Advice on Marketing Hockey Book Empty29.09.10 20:39

Hey Everyone,

I posted a couple of hockey cartoons on here recently that are part of a book called "He Shoots ... He Skewers!" My company is publishing this book in October and I am currently designing a marketing campaign to promote it. So far we've sunk about $25,000 into the project, and we'll probably sink another $10,000 in this fall before we start seeing some proceeds back. What I am looking for are some inexpensive ideas for marketing a book like this.

So I thought I would turn to my hockey brothers at the Nutbars for some ideas. Smile

One idea, of course, is to hype the book online. There is no shortage of good hockey-related websites, but which are the best ones? Are there any good team-specific websites that any of you follow, such as the Oilers website Coppernblue.com, that might be willing to review a book like this?

Any other off-the-board ideas would also be welcome.

Thanks,
Matt

You mentioned Chapters. Very cool. I'm not sure about the contract you would have signed with them. You'll also know much more than I in regard to dealing with the various book houses out there. I suppose talking it up with Sport Mart, National Sports, Sport Chek would have potentials. You're product will certainly be an excellent Christmas gift. I do believe I've seen people advertising books in THE HOCKEY NEWS, particularly at Christmas time. It might be THE HOCKEY NEWS themselves doing the marketing. There are 1,000 angles on selling the books one at a time, but that won't do you any good. How do Wal-Mart/Zellers/Coles... get their books? Perhaps magazine distributors... You've done this stuff before! I sell ads for a magazine.

Currently I'm trying to sell the concept

FREE SHEEP
to farm implement dealers right now! It'd sure be a lot more fun, for an ad heading than AUTUMN SALE.

It sure makes for some fun discussion!

Now, when I broached this subject with Whizz, he suggested that he'd stand on the street corner and holler out the good news, for a couple of beers an hour...

Well, please pass on our thanks to Whizz. I've heard is voice is usually a little hoarse, so hopefully people can understand him. Very Happy

I think we have the bookstore angle covered, it's more a case now of letting people know about the book. My big area of weakness is online marketing, and with so many hockey-related websites out there, I figured some of the nutbars hockey addicts might have some suggestions of good websites to target.

That was more my rationale for asking advice.

Good idea to target the Hockey News. Hadn't thought of that one, believe it or not. I see in a back issue that they do run the occasional review of hockey books.

And for the record, I like the idea of advertising FREE SHEEP. Probably couldn't get away with it though. Smile

I'm not much help to be honest. I use Twitter to stay on top of anything that I want to now "right away". It's by far the best way to snag news/updates on anything hockey related (at least in my mind)

Aside from that I only go to a couple websites - Dobberhockey, the Oilers forums to get my daily dose of whackos, and that's about it for hockey specific (aside from places like LeftWingLock for goalie starts and the like)

The way I find other products are through sources like Facebook (I am interested in things that my friends/family are interested in and use Facebook as a way to get some ideas), and I subscribe to a number of blogs that I read daily. In those blogs will often pop up book reviews etc that will encourage me to dig deeper into finding out if I want to buy them or not.

My gut tells me that the best way to get this book sold is to find a couple key guys who will send out a link to it on their twitter/facebook feed. A quick one liner on twitter from a guy like Bob Mckenzie would go a LONG way towards really getting these things moved.

Have you guys sent out a few promotional/review copies to some key people like that?

Hey Joel,

Yes, we're in the process of sending out promo copies right now, and we will be sending copies to all the major hockey personalities at TSN and CBC.

I think your Twitter suggestion is an interesting one, and something I hadn't really considered. I always think of media in a slightly more formal manner, but I suppose if Bob McKenzie were to twitter about the book that might be all it needs.

We're also sending copies to a few guys like Gretzky, Lemieux, Crosby and Ovech kin. What I was hoping for was a one-liner or two from these guys to use in our promo material, but if they were willing to mention the book on Twitter that could be a really simple way for them to share their thoughts and to bring attention to the book.

This is why I asked you guys! And it's already paying off. I'm so behind the times when it comes to online media Smile

By the way Joel, what are the best Oilers forums and blogs? I know about coppernblue.com, but not familiar with any other ones.

Cheers,
Matt

As much as i detest this website facebook is always an option.
Unlimited people on there, guess it's bascially like twitter but you could probably going into a little more detail on facebook. Post a few pics of the book on it or some links to other a site where your selling it?
Besides that ask Brandon he is a Marketing Expert!!!

Yeah, where is our marketing expert! He should be chiming in on something like this! Smile

Facebook is a good idea, but I expect like Twitter it needs to have the right channel. Bob McKenzie posting something about the book on facebook would probably have a lot more effect than posting something on my account.

Are there any Maple Leafs hockey blogs or forums that you frequent Jarrett?

McKenzie was just a name I threw out there because I know he threw out some thoughts on Fleury's book (he also shamelessly promotes his own book - but hey why not?!) and I would imagine it increased sales.

If you could somehow find a list of some of the most widely followed Twitter personalities (in the hockey world) then that might be a place to start.

Also, are there are widely read hockey bloggers that do book reviews and might be willing to do something similar for this book?

As for Oiler forums/blogs I follow only a couple. The HF Forums is where I go when I want extremely specific stuff about training camp etc - but I try and stay away from the team specific forums for the most part. Too much crazyland there.

A couple of the blogs I follow are:

Lowetide - http://lowetide.blogspot.com/ - Very well read and has a lot of reader engagement in the comments sections of the posts (his last 5 posts have had 154, 80, 66, 155, and 99 comments respectively).

Xtreme Hockey http://xtremehockey.wordpress.com/ - Not sure how popular it is, but the last post he had (which was a while ago now - Sept 4th) actually had McKenzie's book as a part of the post.

Oilersnation.com - Again, quite the readership there.

http://www.mc79hockey.com/ - Not as popular as some of the others I've mentioned but he still gets some decent traffic.

Cool. Thanks for those links Joel. That's exactly what I'm looking for.

I am completely unfamiliar with twitter, other than knowing how to spell it T-W-I-T-T-E-R. Anybody know of widely followed NHL personalities on there? Or how I could find out who they would be?

Thanks again for your time Joel. I really appreciate it! Smile

Rather than recreate the wheel I'll just point you towards David Staples who asked and answered the same question.

To make FREE SHEEP work, that would be one FREE SHEEP with every farm implement purchased. (Sheep are worth $20). Then the dealer would send him out to his pals sheep farm to pick up his FREE SHEEP!

Not too many guys would bother picking up their FREE SHEEP!

As you know there are a lot of boo birds in Montreal. People mistake these morons for fans. When in fact Montreal has way more band wagon hoppers than true fans who show up to the games and boo my players. Some of these people are even friends and I let them know what I really think. One of my friends has a chant "Price Price get off the ice!" Very constructive of her. And I let her know what I think about her knowledge of the sport and that she only follows hockey because its the "cool" thing to do. And not because you have a geuine love for the team. If you did you wouldn't boo one of our own. I can handle expressing displeasure but it gives real fans of the habs a bad name when they a) trash shit downtown or b) go political or even booing our players like I said before.
I hate people who piss on the team but have no clue what it takes to play hockey (male or female) or come up with excuses like "Wel he let in a goal." as an argument as to why they should boo a 22 year old goalie. So when I used to visit said forums I would be the one trying to have an intelligent debate about why the habs lost and instead all these morons come out of the woodworks to blame anything under the sun without actually adressing a point. So I told a few people what I thought and promptly left, lol. Not to say all the people who go to those boards are bad but the infection of hopping on the train pisses me off to no extent which is why despite my hatred for the leafs I respect the true fan base for sticking with their team and not taking the extreme route that hab "fans" take.

Anyways that's my rant and I'm going to bed. I probably didn't make any sense but thats that, lol.
