The Weekend Match-ups Empty
BeitragThema: The Weekend Match-ups   The Weekend Match-ups Empty12.03.11 16:00

I just wanted to say that the level of competition so far during the first round of the playoffs has been amazing ... much more exciting to follow than last year's first round match-ups. In every case the winner is still in question. Here's a small recap:

1) Soo Storm vs. The Juggernauts: This one has the widest margin (46 points) going into Saturday, and is also one of the most surprising match-ups. Who would have thought the season-winning Juggs would struggle so mightily against an eighth-seeded team that itself struggled all year to win games?

If the Hejduk and Steen injuries hold up, it also means that Brandon has a 19-15 game advantage over the weekend.

If the Juggs don't mount an incredible 11th-hour comeback bid, we could be looking at the biggest upset in Nutbars playoff history.

2) 1.21 Gigawatts vs. Desolation Row: I don't know about the rest of you, but I felt mightily bad for Desolation Row going into the playoffs -- what with both Crosby and Malkin out. It seemed like cruel and unusual punishment to have to face a stacked 1.21 squad with his two best players on the IR.

But as always, Gregger kept his confidence and managed to claw his way back from a substantial early deficit. Some of 1.21's big guns are struggling to put pucks in the net at the moment, which has helped DR close the gap to less than 12 fantasy points going into the last weekend.

The games look to be tied 15-15, so I would still say it's a longshot for DR to come up with a win here, but as Greg has already proven, stranger things have happened. Is Jay breathing hard again?

3) Smalltown Sinkhole vs. Buffalo Cab Co: This has been a see-saw match-up of epic proportions for the last two weeks. After an early lead by Sinkhole, Cab Co answered back with several big nights, only to be knocked back again, only to gain the lead again, only to be knocked back again ... well, you get the picture!

As it stands, Sinkhole leads by a modest 17 points going into the last weekend. Which means nothing. The games are also pretty even, with a 16-15 advantage going to the Sinkhole.

Expect more dramatics in this game, with more leads being won and lost until the final buzzer goes. The winner may very well be decided by a bounce of the puck.

4) Arthur Tigers vs. Fitzsy Stars: You all know that I wasn't too happy about facing Scoop's team so early in the playoffs, but so far his team has struggled more than I had anticipated ... with the exception of Bryzgalov and some character named Ribeiro.

Both of us had a quiet first week, but started making progress in step with one another at the beginning of the second week. At the moment, the Stars are ahead by a decent 43 point margin. But as everyone knows, 43 points means very little with an entire weekend of hockey to play.

Unfortunately for the Tigers, some injuries and suspensions have rocked his roster in recent days, and he now finds his team in a 13-16 game deficit going into the final weekend. Will history be made?
