To my memory it is 30. Once the season starts we can make deals that may increase the roster to a maximum of 33.

That is correct. We can only draft up to thirty players during the September draft, and five of them HAVE to be prospect eligible at the start of the season.

Trades may move that number up and down, but the max we can go is 33 players at any one time. If we add more players through trades or the January draft then we have to cut players from our roster to make room.

And let's not forget for those teams able to carry more prospects over, that would come at the cost of the other keepers. For example, if I were able to keep 7 prospects then I would only be able to draft 23 others.
