BeitragThema: Malkin Trade?   Malkin Trade? Empty20.07.10 18:21

I just got a spot in a league that is 30 teams, roto style, with deep rosters. Dynasty setup - basically keep 25 players from year to year.
The league is a tiered setup, top 2 move up a tier each year, bottom 2 get relegated, Tier 3 bottom 2 get tossed out of the league into burning flames where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth - oh and 2 new owners come in. The team I took over just BARELY avoided being relegated into Tier 3 - so it needs some work.

Rosters are: 3C, 3LW, 3RW, 4D, 1G, 1 UTIL, 10 Bench, 5IR

Scoring settings are roto syle:

F - G, A, Plus/Minus, PPP, SOG, PIM
G - W, Saves, GAA

Here is my roster (again keep in mind 30 teams):

C - Malkin, Pavelski (RW/C), Brule, Berglund, Sheppard
LW - Hagman, Kulemin, Booth, Korpikoski, Leblanc
RW - Hornqvist, Grier, Winchester, Connor
D - I White, O'Donnell, Hnidy, Fistric, Van Ryn, Voynov
G - Anderson, Biron, Ramo, Roy

So the biggest needs are on RW and D. The team struggled in G, A, PIM, PPP ... and a little less so (but still did) in SOG and GAA. Huge holes everywhere.

Immediately I set out to perhaps trade Malkin and obviously been flooded with responses. My thought process is to load up on peripheral stats as much as possible (SOG, PIM, +/-) while keeping my points in decent shape. Kulemin was also a prime candidate to move because his points are no guarantee yet and his PIM/SOG etc are ... meh.

Here are some of the offers I have received, keeping in mind that depth is a big factor in this league - so moving Malkin for a few guys CAN work if it's the right guys.

O Jokinen, Souray, and Downie for Malkin - I actually really like the roto yummyness in this deal but SO much risk - Souray could go anywhere and be injured, Jokinen has been an incredible roto stud in the past but who knows now - Downie is Downie

Campbell, St Louis, Bolland - Not bad, but St Louis is due for a drop soon and really these guys don't provide much for some of the 'peripheral' stats. Not a lot of potential here.

Mueller, T Myers, Schneider - Intriguing idea, but Mueller is risky and Schneider is no guarantee yet. With goalies being such a huge factor in this league though getting a guy like Schneider is tempting.

Tavares and Myers - Does nothing for my RW and I will lose this deal for a few years at the very least, if not more if Tavares turns out to be somewhat non-superstarish.

E Staal, Frolik, Asham - Kulemin going back with Malkin on my end - Doesn't address my D, but Staal is great in this roto format (he's a Malkin lite) and Frolik has GREAT upside - Asham is a PIM boost for sure - but is this enough?

Bourque, Foster, Plekanec - This looks crappy but in the roto format I actually get a great deal of icing back in this deal ...

Perry, Stastny, Meszaros for Malkin, Hornqvist - This one has some potential as well, but I hate losing Hornqvist who is my only other good RWer.

Carcillo, Kessel, Bernier for Malkin - Other guy threw it out there, but have a feeling he'll not do it, and not sure if it's that good.

So what do you guys think? Any of these any good or something that you would do? Should I pursue a different angle here to try and fix the team? I can't post this at Dobberhockey since pretty much all of the GMs frequent there.

Hey Joel,

Yeah, this one is a toughie to wrap my head around just because the league is so deep. Your centre position is very strong, but considering Booth's health issues you might want to consider upgrades at LW, RW and D.

I don't your idea of trading Malkin for two or three solid role players, but agree that it should be the right players. If I were you I would make sure I'm getting both youth AND upside coming back, otherwise it might be best to hang on to Malkin.

The deals that might be worth taking a flyer on are the Tavares and Myers for Malkin, although as you say you would likely be losing this for a year or two until Tavares hits the next level. Bit of a risk, but might be worth it.

The E. Staal, Frolik and Asham might have some potential if Frolik has RW eligibility.

I might also consider the Perry, Stastny and Meszaros deal if you could avoid moving Hornqvist with Malkin.

Carcillo, Kessel and Bernier (goalie) would also be worth a look if the GM is serious.

What would I do? I'd probably wait for a year until Malkin regains some of his value (you're selling low right now), then peddle him for three solid young players with upside.

Frolik does have RW eligibility, which was one of the reasons I targetted him. That deal is sitting in my inbox and all I have to do is let the guy know that I want to accept it.

Most of these GMs are quite smart, so getting too much out of them, even if Malkin zips off 125 points next season, is going to be very difficult.

Tavares and Myers would also be a lock for me if I wanted it - ugh I just don't know.

What about Perry, Stastny and Meszaros? The more I look at it, this might be the best option. I feel Stastny is quite underrated while Staal is a tad overrated IMO.

I like Perry as a multi-cat stud more than Frolik, and I think Meszaros might rebound in Philly.

Do you think he'd be willing to take something less than Hornqvist as part of the deal?

The guy would certainly want Hornqvist - he still hasn't responded to the offer I sent.

He initially wanted to do Perry/Stastny for Malkin/Hornqvist.

He really wanted another RWer back in the deal to replace Perry.

Even with Hornqvist leaving it might be decent.

I did some really basic number crunching based on 110 point season for Malkin (and fairly average seasons for the other 4 guys) and got:

Goals - I lose 7
Assists - I gain 20
PPP - Even
Plus/Minus - Tough call - but good chance I'd lose here.
PIM - I gain 80
SOG - I gain 60ish

All VERY rough estimates of course.

Compared to the Staal/Frolik/Asham combo (where I gave Staal 80 points and Frolik 50 and Hornqvist would be kept)

Goals - I gain 35
Assists - I gain 7
PPP - Even
Plus/Minus - Likely I'll lose some here
PIM - Gain of 150
SOG - Gain of 300

So some pretty big gains here. I might have just convinced myself...

Shouldn't you also be factoring in what your lesser players would get if you keep Malkin? Or are you already doing that?

Yeah ... not sure why I didn't do that...mahahah.

Anyways, I'd be replacing Grier and Winchester on RW with Asham and Frolik.
And Malkin at C would be replaced with Staal.

I would still gain in Goals, likely lose a tiny bit in A, and gain some in PIM and quite a bit in SOG.

I have no idea what to do any more, so I've taken a break from thinking about it.

You never know what somebody might offer if Malkin has a bounceback season. Sometimes people are willing to overpay for one of the Big Three by quite a tidy margin. I just think Malkin needs to bounceback before you could get away with that.

You could be right. The team I have right now is honestly less than mediocre, and will go nowhere next season.

Middle of the pack Tier 2 most likely.

Malkin is a monster who had an off year. He is one of my favorite players and I always view him as a notch above Crosby only because of his goal scoring. Not far back from A-Hole too. That's my opinion, FWIW.

Really?

Gomez -- On the decline
Kulikov -- Unproven and on a terrible team
Erik Johnson -- Only elite guy in the package
Sharp -- Underrated, but still midling

Hang on to Malkin. Wait for him to rebound and maybe you'll get a decent offer.
